Chicken pox is a common childhood disease caused by a virus. From ten to twenty days after exposure the symptoms begin with mild headache, loss of appetite and fever. Then after thirty-six hours the eruption appears. The rash usually is seen on the body and later on the face, neck, and extremities. Little red pinpoints enlarge to papules which change to blisters or vesicles. After a few days these break and are covered by dark brown crusts. The spots may become secondarily infected from scratching and pus infection will leave scars.
Chicken pox requires little treatment except to keep the areas free from secondary infection. The fingernails of children should be kept trimmed short. The itching is controllable by a calamine lotion containing one per cent of menthol or of phenol. If secondary infection occurs, antibiotic ointments will stop the spread. Chicken pox seems to be related to the nerve condition causing blisters known as herpes zoster. The common name for herpes zoster is “shingles.”

There is no doubt that breakdown due to excessive environmental stress is associated with physical violence. Studies have demonstrated a relationship between poverty, environmental stress, and violence. Gil (1969, 1970) found that family violence in poor families with high levels of stress from socio-economic deprivation was more frequent, less restrained and more lethal than family violence occurring in middle-class families under less stress.
It might be argued that poor people are more violent because of some factor other than that of increased stress, but other research supports the relationship between the stress level itself, as measured objectively, and the tendency to violence.
A lot of the violence associated with stress occurs in the second stage of stress breakdown, which can be easily identified and prevented. When drugs have been used as a means of staying in the stressful situation without feeling the discomfort of anxiety symptoms, violence is even more likely. I think it is quite probable that simple education on stress breakdown might help to prevent some of the violence in our too-busy society.
I would hope that the reader has understood the following points:
•     Anxiety is an alarm reaction triggered when the nervous system is failing to process incoming information adequately.
When a person experiences anxiety, there are five questions to answer. These may point to the cause of the anxiety.
•      Anxiety can be caused by excessive stress – an overload of the nervous system. Anxiety is thus the first sign of overload, that is, stage one of stress breakdown.
•      By ignoring the warning of anxiety symptoms, people experiencing anxiety under stress may use up their inhibitory and will-power reserves, and develop the symptoms of stage two -loss of emotional control and inability to motivate the self.

Sleep apnoea is diagnosed by performing overnight sleep studies (polysomnography).
The cornerstone of treatment is weight loss; a loss of 10% of body weight is associated with a 50% reduction in the severity of sleep apnoea. Sufferers should avoid coffee, cut down on alcoholic drinks and avoid sleeping pills, which might exacerbate apnoeic episodes. Patients who have difficulty losing weight will usually benefit from continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP), in which a mask is worn over the nose during sleep to force air, under pressure, through the nasal passages and overcome any airway obstruction.
Mechanical and dental devices used to manipulate the airway have limited success. Surgical procedures such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, which removes the bulk of the tissue from the back of the throat, have been shown to be of value in some patients but the considerable operative and postoperative risk, coupled with the uncertainty of success, make losing weight a far more desirable method.
